TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri voiced her criticism over Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s decision to host the Formula E electric cars race in the National Monument or Monas.

“Don’t confront me with Pak Anies. But I must say that Monas is a cultural heritage. By means, it should not be used for any purpose,” said Mega during the PDIP briefing for regional head candidates who would run in the upcoming regional election or Pilkada 2020. “Does the governor know that? Why does not he hold Formula E at other places?”

According to Mega, Monas was painstakingly built by her father, the first Indonesian President Soekarno, who was at that time personally sought funding for the construction of the city’s icon. Soekarno sought the funding personally as he feared the project would not be resumed by the next government, she added.

Nevertheless, the fifth Indonesian President was open to the international eco-friendly competition as long as it complied with the regulations. She mentioned that her residence on Jalan Teuku Umar is also a cultural heritage. Thus, when there is something to be fixed, she must ask for a permit.

Megawati further reminded all regional head candidates not to violate regulations if they are selected to lead their respective regions or otherwise, they would face the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

As previously reported, the central government through the Steering Commission of Medan Merdeka Development helmed by Pratikno allowed Jakarta administration to use Monas as part of the track race of Formula E. The permission was noted in a letter to Anies Baswedan on Friday, February 7.
