TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah interbank exchange rate in Jakarta weakened today as the currency market is overshadowed with the coronavirus fear. The virus, known as the COVID-19, death toll surged after Hubei province recorded 242 more people died on Thursday, Feb. 13.

The rupiah closed 0.15 percent down to trade for 13,694 per US dollar.

"The market digested reports from China that there was a surge in death toll caused by the coronavirus," TRFX Garuda Berjangka director Ibrahim Assuaibi said in Jakarta, February 13.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia's middle rate on Thursday showed the rupiah corrected to Rp13,679 per US dollar from yesterday's closing rate of Rp13,659.

As of today, the number of people who died from the coronavirus infection in Hubei Province is 1,310. Hubei also recorded a staggering amount of new cases, with 14,840 people tested positive for the COVID-19 after authorities started using a new clinical method to diagnose people.
