TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti announced that users of the Quick Response Indonesian Standard (QRIS) are starting to increase.

“The number of merchants registered under QRIS so far has reached 90 percent. This means every merchant adopting the QR system is certainly using QRIS,” said the BI senior deputy on Friday, February 7.

Bank Indonesia has officially issued a regulation that requires payment service providers and transaction systems (PJST) that utilize QR codes in Indonesia to adopt the QRIS. “Every one of them must be linked or attached to QRIS.”

Merchants across Indonesia that transact using QR codes are required to record their settlements into BI’s system via QRIS. This was initially driven by the difficulty of recording settlements from foreign PJSTs such as Alipay or WeChat.

“They now have partnered with banks in Indonesia because foreign PJSTs based abroad must partner with domestic banks or PJSTs,” said Destry. Bank Indonesia intentionally issued this system to keep track of non-cash financial transactions.
