TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi hopes that public transport users in Jakarta greater area (Jabodetabek) can excel users in Japan and Singapore which reach up to 60 percent. The minister said that currently, public transport users in Jakarta only reach 32 percent from 88 million passengers recorded in 2018.

"We see the number of public transport users in Jakarta is still 32 percent. While developed countries like Singapore and Japan are 50-60 percent," Budi Karya said when opening Jabodetabek Transportation Master Plan (RITJ), Tuesday, 4 February 2020.

According to the minister, connectivity between Jakarta and the satellite cities is an important matter. Thus, mass transportation becomes a necessity and its development must be further considered.

He viewed that the most important thing in the development of mass transit is the attempt to include more private parties in the funding.

Minister Budi requested that the regional government also play an active role to develop mass transportation, especially in involving the private sector.

"We should advance the transportation program from the regions with RITJ, to realize a transportation [system] that is smoother, more effective, safer, and affordable, as well as able to provide good guidance. We must not waste time because we'll be facing greater challenges, "said the Transportation Minister.
