TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta has ranked 10th on the list of the most congested cities in the world in 2019 based on the TomTom Traffic index uploaded on tomtom.com website. Although the rank improved from the previous year, TomTom noted an increase in traffic slowdown by 53 percent.

In 2018, DKI Jakarta placed seventh of the most congested city in the world. Even so, traffic slowdown due to congestion in the capital has stagnated at 53 percent since 2018. This shows that there has been no improvement in the level of congestion in Jakarta.

Traffic jams in other cities, meanwhile, are increasing. This has caused a change in the rank of congestion of Jakarta. For example, Istanbul, which ranked 9th, experienced a 2 percent increase in traffic jams and Bogota in the 3rd position with a 5 percent increase.

The TomTom Traffic Index is an institution that measures the level of congestion of cities in the world. This institution measures the level of congestion using anonymous Global Positioning System (GPS) data collected through the navigation system of dashboards and smartphones.

Still based on data on TomTom website, in 2019 Jakarta saw the worst congestion on Wednesday, March 6, with a congestion rate reaching 91 percent. While the lowest level of congestion occurred on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.

TomTom also noted that the highest level of traffic congestion in Jakarta occurred at night during work hours. Drivers need an extra time of 26 minutes to get to their destination. While in the morning, the additional time needed is around 19 minutes.

With this rank, however, traffic congestion in Jakarta is still better than some cities such as Mumbai, Bogota, and Manila. The most congested city in the world according to TomTom is Bengaluru with traffic slowing due to congestion at 71 percent.
