TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Endro S Yahman, questions the Monas revitalization project polemic to the Minister of State Secretariat (Mensesneg), Pratikno.

“Is this a state asset or an asset for Jakarta? Who holds the certification? And how is the Mensesneg supervising the Monas revitalization project which is now a polemic on social media due to the cutting down of trees?" said Endro to Pratikno in a meeting at the House of Representatives' Commission II, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 28 January 2020.

Endro questioned the supervision of Pratikno, as the Chairperson of the Medan Merdeka Development Supervision Commission.

Another PDIP Politician, Junimart Girsang, cited the revitalization project to be an environmental crime, highlighting the cutting down of trees in Monas that should instead be maintained. According to him, the trees in Monas served as a filter for pollution, that is getting worse in Jakarta.

“What would happen to the trees that were cut down? That should be maintained, but it was cut down by the governor. How could this happen? Has the cutting down of trees received permission? Don't let this be, this is an environmental crime,” said Junimart.

The Monas revitalization project, handled by the Jakarta Government has become a public debate, as it reportedly has no permit from the Ministry of State Secretariat. In addition, the procedures that are done are considered not environmentally friendly.
