TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Floods have struck five sub-districts in Bandung District, West Java, since Thursday (Jan. 23), submerging 3,744 houses, four schools, and 17 places of worship, according to the West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

"Until January 24, 2020, at 11 p.m. local time, last night, floods submerged 3,744 homes, four schools, and 17 places of worship," Budi Budiman Wahyu, an official of the West Bandung BPBD, stated on Saturday.

Flooding in the sub-districts of Baleendah, Dayeuhkolot, Bojongsoang, Rancaekek, and Majalaya, caused 225 people to flee to safer places and affected 18,636 residents.

The floodwaters reached heights of between 10 centimeters to 1.7 meters.

"As for the current condition, the water level has risen by some 20 to 40 centimeters at several locations, and access is still severed to the Andir-Katapang road," he noted.

As motor vehicles cannot pass the Andir-Katapang road, the BPBD has deployed four rubber boats, seven fiber boats, and three aluminum boats.

The local authorities have deployed several officers and volunteers to help flood victims in Bandung.
