TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Jakarta Mayor Sigit Wijatmoko said that the floods that formed in the city’s northern residential areas were mainly due to high tides. Jakarta’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) mapped at least 13 locations in the area were submerged under the high tide floods.

“It is because of the high tides,” said Sigit at the City Hall in Central Jakarta on Friday.

According to him, the waters reached a height of 200 centimeters following the constant rainfall since early morning today. The water discharge was unable to be streamed back to the sea.

The mayor also said flood pumps were not activated due to the high tides, which effectively disabled the pumps’ operation. He said the pumps had been used as the floodwater’s starting to recede.

“The floods are receding and the pumps can be activated,” he said.

Areas in North Jakarta affected by the floods comprise Cilincing, Koja, Pademangan, Pandekolangan, and Marunda.
