40 Neighborhoods and Five Roads Flooded in Jakarta as Rivers Overflow

4 April 2024 09:39 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaHeavy rains and the overflowing of several rivers prompted flooding in parts of Jakarta yesterday. The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) noted that 40 neighborhoods and five roads were flooded as of 04:00 a.m. local time.

BPBD Jakarta Executive Head, Isnawa Adji, revealed that the flood was mostly concentrated in East Jakarta. Floods inundated 30 neighborhoods in East Jakarta, covering Cipinang Melayu, Makasar, Lubang Buaya, Kampung Melayu, and Cawang villages.

Flooding also submerged West Jakarta, consisting of two neighborhoods in South Kembangan and one neighborhood in South Kedoya. In South Jakarta, seven neighborhoods were flooded, including four in East Pejaten, and one each in Pela Mampang, Kebagusan, and Ragunan.

BPBD DKI Jakarta noted that tens of residents took shelter in two locations. Six families or 24 Kebagusan residents took shelter at RPTRA Bagus while two families or 10 Kampung Melayu residents were sheltering at the Ittihadul Ikhwan Mosque hall. "The displaced residents of East Cilandak have returned to their homes," Isnawa said on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Flooding also inundated five roads in Jakarta. Jl. Kemang Utara IX, Bangka, South Jakarta and Jl. Raya Mabes Hankam, Bambu Apus, East Jakarta, was flooded with a height of 50 centimeters. Three other roads in East Jakarta were flooded, namely Jalan Raya Bogor KM 19 (HEK), Kramat Jati (15 centimeters); Jalan Diklat Depsos, Rambutan (50 centimeters); and Jalan Pagelarang, Setu (60 centimeters).

In addition to heavy rains, the flooding was also prompted by the overflows of several rivers. Flooding in West Jakarta, for example, occurred due to the overflow of the Pesanggrahan River. In South Jakarta, the floods were caused by downpours and the overflow of the Mampang River, Pesanggrahan River, and Ciliwung River. Meanwhile, flooding in East Jakarta was caused by downpours and the overflow of the Ciliwung River and Cijantung River.
