TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III Speaker, Yandri Susanto, requested the government to restore the role of Puncak as a water absorption region as an answer to flood problems looming the Jakarta Greater Area that consists of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.

In leading the House meeting today with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Speaker Yandri asserts Puncak has dramatically shifted from being a water absorption region into a residential region, which mostly consists of commercial villas mostly owned by non-local residents.

“Puncak used to be filled with trees, but now it’s permeated with brick walls,” said Yandri at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Tuesday, January 14.

“I am aware that it is not the task of the Social Affairs Minister and the Head of BNPB, but I urge this issue to grab the government’s attention,” said Yandri.

Moreover, the meeting also presented the data on the victims of new year’s day flash flood that affected the Jakarta Greater Area, West Java, and Banten. The report suggests 61 people died while 26,463 were forced to take refuge.
