TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi reported that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Abu Dhabi Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the conflict between the United States and Iran in their bilateral meeting at the Qasr Al Watan Palace in the UAE on Sunday, January 12.

“However, the discussions were not focused as the meeting’s main focus is more about economic issues,” said Retno in the Secretariat Cabinet website on Monday.

She also said that both she and the UAE Foreign Affairs Ministry also acknowledged discussing the conflict; “We do not wish for the situation to worsen.”

Retno Marsudi conveyed that the international community, Indonesia included, are apprehensive towards a possible war breaking between the United States and Iran as a situation like this would most certainly affect the world’s economy.

The foreign affairs minister’s data suggest there are more than 400 Indonesians currently in Iran and 800 in Iraq. However, the government suspects that the number would suggest much more than what the data shows.

“This has yet mentioned the Indonesians living in the vicinity of the [conflict area] that can amount to the thousand,” she said. “But once again, the talks were more of an anticipative measure.”
