TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5 magnitudes on the Richter scale rocked Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi today, January 6, at 6:12 a.m. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG said the quake did not trigger a tsunami.

The epicenter was noted at 8.14 degrees south latitude and 107.83 degrees east longitude, 121 kilometers southwest of Garut City, West Java.

The agency’s head for quake and tsunami Rahmat Triyono said in a statement that the tremor occurred at a depth of 41 kilometers. “The quake was a shallow one caused by the subduction of Indo-Australian Plate to Eurasian Plate (thrust fault).”

The tremor was felt in Sukabumi Regency and Pelabuhan Ratu with the level III of the MMI Scale and Bandung with II MMI level.

There is no report on the casualty or damage caused by the earthquake until now. No aftershock is also detected as of 6:50 a.m. BMKG called on the people to remain calm and not affected by baseless information regarding the disaster.
