Banten Flash Floods Damaged Hundreds of Houses

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flash floods that hit six sub-districts in Lebak, Banten Province reportedly destroyed hundreds of houses and dozens of bridges.

Based on Banten Police data, the disaster severely destroyed a total of 635 houses, 18 bridges, and 16 mosques. Meanwhile, another 1,431 houses were lightly damaged.

"55 motorcycles and 9 cars are also damaged due to this disaster," said Banten Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Edy Sumardi on Friday, January 3, 2020.

According to Edy, the six sub-districts in Lebak Regency that were affected by the unfortunate event and landslides were Curug Bitung, Sajira, Cipanas, Lebakgedong, Maja, and Cimarga. "Out of the six areas, Curug Bitung and Sajira suffer heavy damages," he added.

In Curug Bitung sub-district, some 336 houses were severely destroyed, 17 others lightly damaged, and three houses of worship were also damaged. While in Sajira, the flood severely destroyed 209 houses, lightly damaged other 459 houses, four bridges and 10 houses of worship.

Edy said that evacuation posts had been established in five sub-districts, including Lebak Gedong.

"Local administration has handled the incident, opened health posts, provided foods for evacuees by deploying public kitchen cars belonged to Banten Police," Edy added.

However, Edy said that Banten people affected by the flash flood still need other logistics such as blankets and clothes.
