TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Penjaringan sub-district Muhammad Andri confirmed that the giant sea wall on the northern coast of the capital, precisely on the east side of Niza Zachman Port, Muara Baru, burst on Tuesday, December 3.

“That is a project of the public works and public housing ministry,” said Andri via a phone call in Jakarta, Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Andri explained the project is located far from residential areas. Thus the incident did not cause flooding to the land, and the project developer had secured the area.

The 100-meter-long river bank made from concrete allegedly burst to the sea. The locals said that the project dubbed National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) burst at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The public works and public housing ministry’s director of the river and coast, Jarot Widyoko, said today that the damage was still being investigated by the research and development center of water resources.

Muara Baru is one of the priority areas in the NCICD, which its first phase of the giant sea wall project is managed by the central government, regional administration, and private parties. Out of the 29.05-kilometer project, only 8.22 kilometers of the embankment had been built thus far.
