TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II (AP II) tightened security in 19 airports in the wake of the suicide bombing in Medan, North Sumatra, today morning, November 13. CEO Muhammad Awaluddin said his side had also enhanced coordination with the Armed Forces (TNI), National Police, and the intelligence.

“We ensure airports under the management of Angkasa Pura II are safe from acts of terror and can operate as normal to cater to passengers and accommodate flights of all airliners,” said Awaluddin in a written statement, Wednesday, November 13.

Awaluddin explained his side would execute random checks at the Security Check Point (SCP) on passengers and their luggage. He added that each airport had two SCPs; one before passengers entering the check-in area, and the other when passengers entering the boarding lounge.

“And also random check on vehicles and people before entering the airport area and terminal,” he added.

Security was also beefed up at the Access Control Point (ACP) when workers’ vehicles enter the airport’s airside. Moreover, airport personnel would be mobilized to examine passengers’ bag or suitcase before entering the cabin.

“Airport Security Committee continuously monitors and takes full coordination in order to maintain security, safety, and order in airports of AP II,” Awaluddin concluded.

Earlier today, November 13, a bomb exploded at Medan Police headquarters at 08:45 a.m. The bombers, assumed to be on a suicide mission, were seen wearing online ojek jackets. No fatality in this incident and the police are still investigating the incident.
