TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Police have arrested two Romanian nationals who were involved in a series of ATM card-skimming crimes. One of the suspects was neutralized by police personnel for resisting arrest.

“Their crime involved deep scamming and minuscule spy cameras, which were installed in the money machines to record people’s PIN number,” said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday.

The two Romanians were identified as Solomes and Kristea. They were arrested on Saturday, November 9, at an ATM on Kemang Raya Street while preparing to break into the ATM.

The police initially investigated the skimming case after receiving 17 reports from bank customers who reported possible thefts and bank charges for items they never purchased. The losses were said to amount to Rp137 million.

“Solomes resisted arrest and even went as far to snatch a firearm belonging to the police. We then had to neutralize him,” said Argo. Suspect Solomes was rushed to the RS Fatmawati hospital but died while en route due to blood loss. Kristea now faces charges with penalties of up to 20-years in prison.
