TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta environment agency is set to hold an academic study on the use of PM (particulate matter) 2.5 air quality measurements next year that will cost the capital Rp410 million.

This plan was announced by the agency’s Head, Andono Warih, in a meeting with the Jakarta Council’s (DPRD) Commission D in Jakarta today.

The agency based its intent on the fact that the city measures air quality with a PM 10 parameter, which has been the source of conflicting data with NGOs that measure air quality with PM 2.5 tools. This is due to the size of the air particulates that differ from equipment owned by the city and those utilized by the NGOs.

“We need to conduct a study to standardize the use of PM 2.5,” said Andono.

The budget for the plan has finally been approved as the review involved academics and professionals who were not from the Jakarta environment agency.

Jakarta has grabbed the spotlight in terms of cities with bad air quality for the past five months, especially based on the data from AirVisual.com, which uses PM 2.5 air particulate measurements.
