TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI) suspects unfortunate motives from the Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly to double-cross President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo throughout the government’s talks on the revision (RUU) of law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK Law).

According to the institute, Yasonna failed to conduct one of the president’s orders throughout the process of the law’s revision.

“I suspect attempts to betray the President by the Law and Human Rights Minister,” said Head of YLBHI’s advocacy, M. Isnur at his office in Central Jakarta on Sunday.

He thinks that Yasonna’s betrayal commenced after President Jokowi issued a decree that effectively agrees to the revised Articles in the KPK Law to the House of Representatives (DPR) on September 11. The following day, Yassona sent the letter containing the government’s view on the RUU KPK.

Isnur strongly doubts that Minister Yassona had actually considered Jokowi’s presidential decree letter as he claims it shows in the problem inventory list (DIM) and conflicting views regarding the KPK Law revision.

“The DIM contained many elements that did not coincide with the president’s vision of the law. No wonder the President was caught off guard,” said the YLBHI head of advocacy.

Quoted from Tempo Magazine’s latest edition, President Jokowi mentioned that there are several Articles in the revised KPK Law that was far from what he had requested in his decree. The President mentioned this in a meeting with former KPK leaders in the State Palace in September.

On a separate occasion, Minister Yasonna strongly denies Isnur’s allegations which he deems as a blatant attempt on slander and calls for the YLBHI to not go rouge in its accusations.

“That is vicious slander,” said Yasonna Laoly.
