TEMPO.CO, Makassar - South Sulawesi Governor M Nurdin Abdullah expressed his condolences over the death of his 24 people in Wamena, Jayawijaya, Papua.

"I have been informed that 24 people died," said Nurdin in his statement in Makassar, Monday, September 30.

According to Nurdin, the situation is gradually under control, despite many still evacuated to Jayapura and other regions. The governor pledged to continuously monitor and form coordination to obtain the latest condition in Wamena, including whether his people will be remigrated to Makassar.

“We will communicate it with local administration first. Hopefully, the condition is getting normal so our people in Papua can feel at ease,” said Nurdin, adding that some of South Sulawesi people have returned.

The head of South Sulawesi Community in Wamena, Mansur, said, “The total number of dead victims is 24 people, including those 10 who have been brought to Makassar.”

Nurdin and South Sulawesi Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mas Laupe planned to depart to Wamena. However before that, he had deployed a team including a medical team and logistic needs.

Governor Nurdin said many people of South Sulawesi still stayed in Wamena, Papua, especially the males. “They are staying there, because they have assets to be secured.”
