TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported per 3 p.m. today, September 26, that six people died and four others sustained injuries due to the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Ambon at 06:46 a.m.

“The dead and injured people are struck by a collapsed building,” said the agency spokesman Agus Wibowo in Jakarta, Thursday, September 26.

The quake destroyed four residences, three educational facilities, two worship houses, three office buildings, one bridge, and one public facility.

Agus said the tremor, which was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, had a strong intensity of up to VI-VII MMI level.

Some people in the city and its vicinity areas flee to highlands as they fear of a tsunami despite the regional Geophysics Station head Sunardi announced that the quake had no potential to trigger high waves.

Today’s quake in Ambon was recorded at the magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, which was then updated to the magnitude of 6.5. The tremor was felt in Kairatu, Haruku, Tihulae, and Latu, according to Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BNPB added that the government has opened up emergency posts to help earthquake victims, and the public are appealed to remain vigilant.
