Aceh Fishermen Urged to Use GPS at Sea to Anticipate Smog

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Aceh customary board of sea commander called on all of the fishermen to use a navigation tool when going for fishing such as Global Positioning System (GPS) to avoid getting lost as the forest fire haze has covered the skies in the region.
"To all of the fishermen, please use GPS when going for fishing to locate the boat's position at sea," said the chief of customary board of sea commander Amiruddin, as quoted by Antara, in Meulaboh, September 24.
The thick smog from the land and forest fire in Riau and Kalimantan resulted at the limited visibility and interfered with breathing. It also interfered with the visibility of the fishermen which could pose a bad impact to them if not anticipated immediately.
"I'm afraid they'll get lost to the territory of other countries if there is no navigation tool like GPS since they cannot find a way home," Amiruddin said, admitting that most of Aceh fishermen did not own advanced navigation equipment for fishing.
His office called on the fishermen to also bring along smog prevention equipment such as masks to avoid possible obstacles at sea.
