TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Chairman Laode Muhammad Syarif openly regrets the decision made by House of Representatives (DPR) in the ease of granting remission and pardon stated in the Law on Correctional Institutions (UU PAS).

Legislators passed the law that will enable suspects of extraordinary crimes such as terrorism, corruption, and human rights violators, to be granted remission.

“I truly regret the House’s move since we had always considered corruption as a serious and extraordinary crime. It just isn’t right to treat corruptors the same level as flip-flop thieves,” said Laode at the KPK headquarters on Thursday, September 19.

He further believes the three laws that were passed by the House is an intentional and systematic effort.

Previously reported, DPR’s legal commission deputy Desmond J. Mahesa said that the law will ease the remission granting for suspects of extraordinary crimes, which he claims was passed under the pretense of providing equal justice and legal certainty.
