KPK Spokesman: New Law Veers from President Jokowi's Instruction

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Laode Muhammad Syarif argues that the new KPK Law has far gone beyond the instructions of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
“The revision that was passed yesterday had exceeded the President’s instructions that were expressed in a press conference last week,” said Syarif in a written statement on Tuesday, September 17.
Meanwhile, KPK Spokesman Febri Diansyah says that the agency saw a number of changes in the new law which differed to what the president mentioned. These changes, he said, can potentially weaken KPK’s performance.
“We will immediately screen each and every Article and Clauses in the Law to prevent further negative effects,” said the spokesman.
In order to do so, the anti-graft agency has formed a transition team that will look into every detail about the consequences of the Law’s changes that have immediate effect toward the agency and its employees.
On Friday, September 13, President Joko Widodo talked about a number of the government’s objections regarding the substance contained in House of Representatives’ KPK Law revision that oversees the agency’s wiretapping abilities and investigators that are mandated to be sourced from the police institution.
