TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Saut Situmorang announced his resignation from the position as deputy chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) just one day after the House of Representatives (DPR) elected five leaders to run the anti-graft agency.

The naming of the five new leaders took place in the midst of strong protests both from the KPK members and public as it is deemed as an attempt to weaken the agency, not mentioning DPR’s attempt to accelerate the KPK Law revision that sees its substance being changed to curb the agency’s authority.

Saut Situmorang is one of the many people who relentlessly criticize the candidates as he argues that the people who were elected lack integrity.

He sent an open letter of resignation to every KPK employee’s email on Friday, September 13; “To everyone who is blessed by God, let me explain several things related to my resignation as a KPK leader that will be immediately effective starting on Monday, September 16, 2019.”

Moreover, Saut Situmorang's email stresses the reason why he resigned and that he will commit to two remaining events that he will attend as a KPK employee on Saturday and Sunday. He also thanked staff members in the agency’s fourth-edition tenure.
