TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah said on Wednesday that BJ Habibie is worthy of a Nobel Prize as he argues that the former president was the figure who maintained Indonesia’s democracy.

Fahri said that he cannot imagine the country developing into a democratic state as it is known today if not for the leadership shown by Habibie as he led the country briefly from 1998 to 1999.

“Imagine Pak Habibie wrongly leading the country in his 1 year 7 months tenure as president, the nation could have fallen to decay,” said Fahri Hamzah in South Jakarta on Wednesday.

He argues that it was Habibie’s intelligence, benevolence, and graciousness, that guided the country to become a united, just, and prosperous nation as it is.

“His passing tonight left us all with great sorrow but it will hopefully encourage us to learn about the greatness of our nation and how significant his contributions were for the nation in the moment of transition,” said Fahri, referring to Indonesia’s ‘reformation’ era at the end of BJ Habibie’s leadership where Indonesia left the New Order to the era of Reform.
