TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Politician Fahri Hamzah on Tuesday said the 2024 presidential candidacy declaration by Anies Baswedan and NasDem Party has sparked the country’s political realm as other political parties have started to mutter their own candidates for the election – which registration phase will only officially be opened in 2023.
The Gelora Party politician lamented that the premature declaration far ahead of the election sparked divide and polarization in society.
“Right now, the presidential election declarations have caused an early divide. Identity politics and polarization have emerged again,” said Fahri in a statement on October 11.
Fahri asserted the fact that October 19 to November 25, 2023, is the official period when presidential and vice presidential candidates are announced. He believes political parties should discuss ideas and substantial matters instead of focusing on bringing up candidates.
“However, what is happening now is that the first presidential candidates are emerging. Most of the presidential candidates lack ideas," he said.
The former House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker insists that the presidential election candidacy announcements will only seem superficial, barren of meaningful political competition, and crammed with irrelevancy.
