TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto said the government was set to allocate Rp100 billion to renovate damaged public facilities and vital objects during the the riots in Papua.

“Rp100 billion is ready to redevelop [the province],” he said in a press conference in his office, Monday, September 9.

To date, some 6,500 joint personnel of the National Police and the Indonesian Military (TNI) are still clearing up the debris of destroyed buildings so the development projects could commence soon.

In addition, the government is mulling over granting compensation for damaged houses. “So they can rebuild their houses and stores affected by the acts of anarchy,” he added.

The former TNI commander further assured that the current conditions in Papua and West Papua were safe and under control. As of today, social activities in the country’s easternmost region is running normally.

“Stores and markets have been reopened. Transportation and gas stations operate normally, as well as electricity and water supplies, telecommunication access, offices, and schools. The conditions have returned to normal, yet we admit there is still a threat and flyers calling for a rally that may turn into anarchy,” Wiranto said.
