TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) responded to the decision made by the Djarum Foundation upon halting PB Djarum’s annual badminton trial.

KPAI Commissioner Sitti Hikmawaty says that the organization has never intended to halt the badminton trials for potential young athletes but rather protest against the cigarette industry’s attempt to promote tobacco products toward young children.

“What is being fought against is the hidden exploitation attempt,” said Sitti Hikmawaty on Monday, September 9.

She further asserts that the banning of any form of exploitation by tobacco companies are regulated by the Indonesian Government and mentions that Djarum Foundation must adhere to Law No.35/2014 on child protection, Government Decree No.109/2012 overseeing tobacco control, and Law No.36/2009.

“Within the series of regulations, the logo placements of addictive tobacco products on children is seen as a form of exploitation. So now the options are to follow the State Law or not,” said Sitti.

Previously reported, Djarum Foundation announced that it will halt its annual badminton trial that was first held in 2006. PB Djarum Director Yoppy Rosimin announced that 2019 will be the last year the badminton scout trial will be held.
