TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - One of Indonesia’s global popular tourist destinations, Raja Ampat District in West Papua Province, was struck by a minor magnitude-2.4 earthquake on Saturday midnight. Authorities announced that it will not potentially cause a tsunami.
Based on the data by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Sorong, the earthquake originated 47-kilometers Northwest of Raja Ampat from the depth of 10-kilometers. The specific coordinates were at 0.39 south latitude and 130.38 east longitude.
Based on the earthquake’s epicenter and hypocenter, the BMKG deemed it as a shallow earthquake caused by activities from a local normal fault mechanism.
Despite the weak quake, the shaking and other effects were reportedly felt by Raja Ampat locals. Damage reports have yet been announced.
