National Geographic Deems Bantar Gebang as World's Largest Dump

TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Jakarta’s Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Treatment Area (TPST Bantar Gebang) in Bekasi has again become public limelight. The official Instagram account of the US-based news company National Geographic @natgeo uploaded a photo of the 110-hectare landfill on Thursday, September 5.
The photo displayed a man scavenging garbage with a basket on his back. Over 1,300 people liked the post 18 hours after it was shared.
The caption said that the landfill is considered as the world’s largest dump, sparking responses from thousands of internet citizens.
“Located near Jakarta, Indonesia, it is thought to be the largest dump in the world,” as quoted from the caption Friday, September 6.
An account @marshalkramer responded, “God, we’ve done so bad.” Another netizen @dlluter said, “that’s thinking outside the box.”
Another Instagram account @welly_lim even mentioned the official account of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, and Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.
TPST Bantargebang is established since 1985. Jakarta averagely dumped 7,000 tons of waste in the landfill, which is predicted to last only until 2021.
