TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police (Polri) spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo announced that the 6,000 joint personnel from the police and the military (TNI) were deployed to Papua and West Papua to establish security in the regions.
“The presence of the police and the military joint personnel in the two regions is to establish a safe and secure Papua,” he said in Jakarta on Monday.
He said that residents should not fear the presence of figures of authority as the troops were deployed in the regions to work in conjunction with local regional figures, regional administrations, religious figures, and youths of Papua. The joint effort eyes to prevent the public from dwelling further in provocative issues spread by irresponsible people.
There are at least 6,000 joint personnel from the National Police (Polri) and the Armed Forces (TNI) that are stationed in numerous locations such as Manokwari, Sorong, Paniai, Deiyai, Nabire, and Fakfak.
National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, who is currently and will be in Papua for the next 4 days, says there are possibilities that the number of troops will increase in the future if necessary.
