TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A senior journalist Amarzan Ismail Hamid or publicly known as Amarzan Loebis passed away earlier today, September 2, at 03:30 a.m. in his residence on Jalan Taman Bougenville, Lippo Cikarang.

The 78-year-old man died due to a stroke. He had received medical treatment in Siloam Hospital, Cikarang. He will be laid to rest at Perwira General Cemetery on Jalan Kali Abang, North Bekasi this afternoon.

Throughout his life, Amarzan had been exiled to Buru Island, Maluku by the New Order regime when he was an editor in Harian Rakyat newspaper, a media considered to have affiliation with the left-wing faction.

“It’s difficult to forget that Soeharto took away my productive age,” said Amarzan in an interview with Tempo Institute in 2012.

For Amarzan, 1965 was the beginning year of the reign of a truly authoritarian regime that had no believe in democracy, did not care about human rights, and refused to hear public dissent. He said that the regime could arrest anyone with any reason without legal proceedings.
