TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The country’s fifth president and PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri highlights the pollution levels produced by Jakarta, which she deems has reached an alarming level.

She argues that the city’s administration must coordinate with the central government to compose a strategy that could solve the problem.

“That’s embarrassing, it’s reached the highest point they say,” said Megawati in a written statement on Wednesday, August 28.

She then explained that the innovations that come, which she acknowledged has been created, must be able to equal the pollution levels. The policies recently introduced that tend to welcome electric vehicles is hoped to reduce emissions by 30 percent.

As of August 11, 2019, the city’s air quality based on Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded to be at 171, which is the lowest point so far compared to previous experiences. However, AirVisual records show Jakarta ranked first in numerous occasions as the city with the worst air quality.

Megawati stresses that Jakarta must solve this problem even after its capital city status will be moved to East Kalimantan in the near future.
