Papua Unrest; 30 Public Facilities in Sorong Damaged

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police said the number of public facilities in Manokwari and Sorong, West Papua, that are damaged following the Papua unrest continues to increase.
“Some 30 facilities in Sorong City and 13 in Manokwari are damaged,” said national police chief of public information Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo on Wednesday, August 21.
He said the police, military (TNI), and regional government officials have started to clean up the debris resulted from the rioting, yet the amount of the loss caused by the damage has yet to be calculated.
“We’re still collecting the data,” Dedi said.
West Papua Governor and DPRD office buildings were burnt following the riot in Manokwari and Sorong. A number of public facilities such as the airport also became a target of public anger, while a number of vehicles were found in wrecked condition and scorched.
Previously, a protest turned to riot in Manokwari and Sorong on August 19, following an assault against a number of students in Malang and Surabaya last week.
