TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Refugees temporarily accommodated at a former building of the West Jakarta military command (Kodim) in Kalideres took part in several games to commemorate the 74th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day.

Among the games held during the event were the sack race, egg and spoon race, and cracker eating contest.

"This is my first time to witness such an event on Independence Day. Such tradition was not followed in my country," Reza Hasini, a refugee from Afghanistan, stated here on Saturday.

Hasini expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for its assistance and for organizing the event to entertain the refugees.

Wasi Abidi, another Afghan refugee, confirmed that he had participated in a similar event in Bogor, West Java.

"I saw a contest like this when I was in Bogor. It was fun," he noted.

His friend, Hayet Huseini, remarked that the games were both fun and edifying.

"The games are fun and also offer some life lessons," he stated.

The event was organized by the Kalideres Police with the support of volunteers and related institutions.

"We want to promote Indonesian culture," Deputy Kalideres Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Julianto stated.

The organizers of the Independence Day contest have readied gifts for the winners of each games.
