Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly said the remission was the state's appreciation to the inmates for improving themselves better. "Through the remission, I hope they'll keep on obeying the law," he said in a press release Saturday, August 17.

The ministry's Director-General of Corrections, Sri Puguh Budi Utami, said the remission is an appreciation to those who have complied with the law during their sentence period.

He added that it also as a part of the Ministry's implementation of revitalization in the correctional facilities. "The remission is also purposed to reduce the budget to maintain the correctional inmates," he said.

Based on the Ministry's data as per August 14, the total number of correctional inmates throughout Indonesia is 265,151. The remission granting is claimed to have cut the prisoners' meal budget at Rp184 billion.
