TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) launches QRIS or QR Code Indonesian Standard on the Independence Day, August 17. QRIS is a standardized Quick Response Code for payment through a server-based application, electronic wallet, or mobile banking.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said using QRIS will provide a lot of benefit and easiness for customers/users. In addition, a transaction with the QR Code that is integrated or standardized with QRIS will be more profitable.

"Not only it eases [the users], but also benefits the banking industry and payment system service providers," Perry said during QRIS launching event at the central bank complex in Jakarta, August 17.

He said conducting a QR Code transaction that is integrated with QRIS have a lower cost and tend to be similar among payment system service providers. It can be seen from the percentage of the merchant discount rate (MDR).

The MDR for regular merchants is 0.7 percent per transaction, while the MDR for special merchants is 0.6 percent. A transaction cost of 0.4 will be given for fuel purchase, while for donation, the cost is 0 percent.

"It is free of charge for donation using QR Code with QRIS standard," Perry remarked.
