TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Bambang Soesatyo touched on the incompletion of severe human rights violation cases during his opening speech at the annual session of 2019-2020 on Friday, August 16.

“At the end of this period, DPR demanded the government pay attention to the resolution of the human rights violation cases,” said Bambang at the Plenary Meeting Room I, Senayan Complex, Jakarta, Friday, August 16.

Bambang, commonly called Bamsoet, referred to the statement delivered by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) that there was no significant progress in the completion of human rights violation cases.

In addition, there are complaints about similar cases without clear follow-ups and tight monitoring. Similar conditions also happened to cases relative to severe human rights violations.

“There is no case about severe human rights violation that has been concluded during the government era of 2014-2019,” Bamsoet remarked.

Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi during his state speech mentioned issues about legal, human rights, and corruption eradication. However, instead of highlighting law enforcement, the President talked about preventive measures.

According to him, the success of the law enforcement was not only calculated from the number of completed cases and people arrested, but also from early preventive measures taken.

“We must calculate how many potential legal and human rights violations that can be prevented and how much potential state losses that can be saved. This must be underlined. Therefore, its management and system are necessary to be built,” said Jokowi.
