TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national police (Polri) revealed the cause of death of first brigadier (Briptu) Haedar who unfortunately died in Papua after he was shot in the back of his head in his attempt to flee from his armed captors.

“He was shot at the back of his head during his escape,” said the Head of Polri public information bureau Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo in a written statement today.

Haedar’s body was flown away from Papua to his hometown of Makassar, where he will be buried. The 24-year old policeman was taken hostage by a local armed group on Monday, August 12, at around noon.

The kidnapping was also witnessed by fellow police chief brigadier (Bripka) Alfonso who immediately ducked to the ground and later run to the Ilaga police sector to report the incident. Haedar’s body was discovered by a joint military-police search team.

The tragic end of the police officer started as both Haedar and Alfonso Wakun were patrolling on motorcycle around the Usir Village in the Puncak District, Papua. Haedar was coaxed to get off his motorcycle by a local who called him, but as he walked closer to the person calling him, a group of armed men suddenly appeared from bushes and kidnapped Haedar.
