Fishermen Demand Compensation over Massive Pertamina Oil Spill

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fishermen of the North Karawang Sea openly demanded compensation following an oil spill caused by a leak in one of three Pertamina oil wells at the Offshore North West Java (ONWJ) Block.
Head of the Indonesian Fishermen Association (HNSI) Yussuf Solichien explained that local fishermen demand the state-owned oil firm to pay Rp168.948 billion in compensation to cover the financial losses endured by the fishermen as they cannot go fishing throughout 60-days due to the spill.
“There are 18,772 fishermen in the capture fishery and aquaculture who were unable to make a living,” said Yussuf on Wednesday, August 8.
Meanwhile, Vice President Relations Pertamina Hulu Energy Ifki Sukarya explained that the company is currently mobilizing Soehanah jack-up drilling rig in the vicinity of the relief well, while at the same time conducting geohazard and geotechnical surveys.
“The main priority is for the safety of workers, residents, and the surrounding environment,” said Ifki in an official statement.
