Online Ojek Drivers Oppose Odd-Even Policy for Motorcycles

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of online motorcycle taxi (online ojek) drivers community dubbed Gabungan Aksi Roda Dua (Garda) or the Two-wheeled Action Association, Igun Wicaksono, demanded Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan revoke the odd-even policy for motorcycles. Igun opined the traffic scheme would burden drivers since the working frequency will likely tumble.
“We want it to be canceled. We will take measures as we did previously when we asked for the revocation for motorcycle restrictions in the MH Thamrin area,” said Igun when contacted on Friday, August 2.
According to Igun, not only would the policy possibly reduce ojek orders, it will also force drivers to seek alternative routes, which often mean longer routes. “While the [ojek] tariff is not set based on the route, but on a straight line,” he added.
Additionally, this latest Gubernatorial Instruction, which will be tested starting Monday, August 5, has the potential to increase drivers’ operational costs, thus they will likely refuse to operate near the affected roads.
Therefore, Igun urged the government to review the odd-even policy for motorcycles that was reportedly passed to control air quality in Jakarta during this dry season.
