Hiking Trails on Mount Panderman Closed after Forest Fire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The hiking trails on Mount Panderman, Batu City, East Java is closed until further notice following fires in the pine forest.
“Until the mountain is declared safe, it’ll be temporarily closed,” said the Batu City administration spokesperson, Suliyanah, on Monday, July 22.
The regional government is currently coordinating with Batu Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Indonesian Military (TNI), National Police, state-owned forestry firm Perhutani, the Village Community Forest Institute (LMDH), Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and volunteers in the mountain’s hiking post.
“We focus on evacuating hikers in the 227 area, the site of the forest fire,” she added.
According to Suliyanah, the fire suppression process is still ongoing. There were 200 joint firefighters deployed to extinguish the fire in three locations, particularly in the forest production area.
The officers, she said, strived to prevent the forest fire from spreading to residential areas by creating firebreaks.
