5.0 M Earthquake Hits Mentawai Islands in W. Sumatra on Sunday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that West Sumatra was hit by a non-tsunami threat 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, July 14, at 23:47 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

According to their website, the earthquake originated 36-kilometers southeast of the Mentawai Islands from the depth of 49 kilometers (2.35 South Latitude; 99.68 East Longitude).

This is the second 5.0 magnitude earthquake since Sunday night in Indonesia after a 5.2 magnitude quake struck South Halmahera, North Maluku, which originated from 43 kilometers east of Labuha.

48 aftershocks were recorded up to 23:00 WIB following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hitting South Halmahera at 16:10 WIB.
