TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang Brodjonegoro said that the capital city move from Jakarta to Kalimantan is not the only way to reduce economic inequality among the country’s regions.

“I’m not saying that is the only way,” said Bambang in a public discussion at Bappenas Headquarters in Central Jakarta today, July 10, adding that the economic inequality also related to the people's income.

He said that Indonesia is still learning from other countries to cope with economic inequality. The same goes for the plan of moving the capital city as Bambang further explained that Indonesia reflects on other countries that have done the same, such as Malaysia, South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Brazil.

Out of the four countries, Brazil is the first country that moves its capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in 1960, even though the economic disparity there is much higher compared to Indonesia.

Former Indonesian Ambassador for Brazil of 2010-2015, Sudaryomo Hartosudarmo said that the move saw Brasilia grow into an advanced city. However, he admits that Brasilia is currently home to wealthy residents with the remaining middle-class living in 20 satellite cities in its vicinity.
