TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Agriculture recorded at least 100 regencies/cities are affected by drought this year. The areas spread across Java Island, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara with total affected areas reaching 102,746 hectares and crop failures of 9,358 hectares.

The ministry also announced that East Java was the hardest-hit province with 34,006 hectares. The Director General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities, Sarwo Edhy, said this situation was caused by the lack of rainfall for 30-days straight.

“Based on the map that monitors days without rain, most of Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara have not experienced rain for more than 30-days,” Said Sarwo at the ministry today.

The second most affected area, according to the ministry, is Central Java with more than 32 thousand hectares.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced extreme drought might last up to September and would peak in August.

Sarwo asked residents of the affected areas to create water reservoirs or harvest rainwater or water from other sources through piping.
