TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated there is no report on casualties and damage following the earthquake that struck the province’s five cities on late hours of Sunday, July 7.

“No report from the five cities’ BPBD yet so far,” said the agency head Joy Oroh to Tempo on Monday, July 8.

The five cities in question are Manado, Bitung, Mobagu, Sangir Island, Sitaro, and Bolaang Mongondow Regency.

The quake with magnitude 7.1 rocked North Sulawesi and North Maluku on Sunday, at 22:08 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The epicenter was located in western of Ternate.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued tsunami early warning a few minutes after the tremor occurred. The warning was revoked at 00:01 WIB.

Joy explained the earthquake that was followed by the warning caused public panic in the region. Many locals flee their homes and seek higher grounds.

At present, the condition has returned to normal. “I’ve checked to Manado City, the people have run their activities as usual,” Joy concluded.
