TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Sumatran elephant was discovered lifeless last week within the area of a plantation in Semambu Village, Jambi, owned by PT Lestari Asri Jaya (LAJ). The dead female elephant was first found by plantation employees.

Head of Jambi’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Jambi) Rahmad Saleh announced that the agency has dispatched a team of investigators and veterinarian to conduct a necropsy on the elephant’s remains.

In a separate location, the plantation’s Director Meizani Irmadhiany said that the mammal that died in the concession area was not caused by chemical substances after initial observation and identification by the plant’s Ranger Wildlife Conservation Area (WCA) team.

“We fully support a thorough and transparent investigation of the elephant’s death within the WCA area. This is our commitment to LAJ’s sustainability with the government,” said Meizani.

The WCA ranger team conducts routine patrols and frequent socializing toward local residents to avoid conflicts from happening between the endangered animal and local people.
