TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Environment Agency runs a competition dubbed Jakarta Less Waste Building & Restaurant Initiative 2019 in a bid to reduce plastic waste from restaurants and office buildings.

The agency acting head Andono Warih explained the event also aims to gather opinions from food and beverages (F&B) entrepreneurs about the draft of a gubernatorial regulation concerning the use of plastic bags.

“So once the regulation is in place, we can fully implement it,” said Andono in JCH Hive, Setiabudi, Central Jakarta, Thursday, June 13. “This program is one of our strategies to gain feedbacks.”

Jakarta Less Waste Building & Restaurant Initiative 2019 targeted 200 participants; 100 building owners and 100 restaurant entrepreneurs. The buildings include shopping malls, hotel, office spaces, hospitals, and entertainment places.

The city’s agency had established two meetings with 200 owners of restaurants and buildings in the capital to disseminate less waste movement by joining the contest.

According to Andono, Jakarta daily produced 7,500-ton waste that 29 percent of them came from commercial areas and most of the waste was food leftovers.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan handed the draft bill on the use of plastic waste to the agency. The former acting head of the agency, Djafar Muchlisin, said that Anies ordered his staffers to publicize the draft to entrepreneurs before ratifying it.
