TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) announced that there is a possibility for a female Speaker to lead the House of Representatives (DPR) based on the ongoing official vote count information system (Situng).

“Definitely, PDIP believes equality for every citizen. We never differentiate based on someone’s gender or social status. But history will always be made because that is our collective duty,” said PDIP secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto at the party’s Jakarta headquarters on Tuesday, May 8.

However, Hasto did not reveal the legislative candidate’s identity with the highest possibility to take the position. He only asserted that PDIP will nominate the best candidate the party has to offer based on the person’s lengthy experience.

According to Hasto, Situng results and the manual vote counting by the General Elections Commission (KPU) PDIP obtained suggest that it leads with 20.51 percent, just 8 percent higher compared to Golkar with 12.63 percent.

PDIP predicted it will grab the position as House speaker while five political parties will compete for a seat as Deputy Speaker which consists of Golkar, NasDem, Gerindra, and PKB.

“We would like to thank the people for their trust to PDIP and four other parties joined in the Indonesia working coalition,” said Hasto who once again assured that the party will clench the House speaker seat.
