TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During the holy month of Ramadan, many Muslims cannot go on breaking the fast without consuming sweet ice desserts that come from various regions in Indonesia.

Religious teachings suggest Muslims to break their fast either by drinking water or by consuming dates, while local wisdom often sees people break their fast with a glass of warm sweet tea or iced tea.

But there are more than the aforementioned, here are 5 examples:

1. Es goyobod

Many people may not be too familiar with the name “es goyobod” or goyobod ice, especially consuming it as a break-the-fast dessert. This cold sorbet originates from Bandung, West Java, and is made from mung bean flour known as “hunkwe” that is cooked with coconut milk that is constantly stirred until it becomes a light batter thickening into a jelly-like consistency.

2. Es pisang ijo

Es pisang ijo is between a beverage and an ice-cold soup unique from South Sulawesi. As you might have guessed, the main ingredient is sliced bananas covered with light dough mix from suji leaf submerged in cold sweet syrup.

3. Es doger

This ice dessert has a consistency more like multilayer sorbet made out of various ingredients, but the main part is sugared sweet coconut milk-based ice in pink syrup, served with avocado, chunks of bread, and tapai.

4. Es cendol

This dessert consists of a dark-green pulpy dish of rice (or sago) flour worms with coconut milk and syrup of areca sugar covered with shaved ice.

5. Es nona

This breaking-the-fast dessert is known from Pontianak, West Kalimantan. It is made from pandanus coconut syrup, sweetened papaya, sliced jackfruits, sweetened condensed milk, and cincau (grass jelly).
